Free university education in Scotland
This sounds too good to be true, but it is in fact free if you are a European Union student. Unfortunately if you are from outwith the EU you will have to pay in full, but hopefully a government sponsorship or a nice scholarship can help with the cost.
The strangest thing is that it is free for all European Union students, but not for all UK students!!! Crazy but true. “How is this possible ?” I hear you ask. Well it is simple really. The Scottish government voted to keep free education for all Scottish students (fantastic for when my children go to university). EU law states that as a member state we must offer the same services to all EU residents, so that’s why it is free for all. I think the Scottish government would like to charge for this, but the law is the law. However, the Scottish government can control matters in the UK, so they have decided to charge English, Welsh and Northern Irish students as a result.
Unfair? Well a Scottish student has to pay in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, so not really.
In the meantime al EU students should take advantage of this law and study in Scotland as it’s free and has some of the best Universities in Europe. Happy studying 🙂
